Peru is best known for great food and of course the Inca citadel known as Machu Picchu,. Many travelers visit the stone city every day and everyone wants to be prepared when they get there, since many take trails in order to reach Machu Picchu they don’t exactly know what is appropriate to take in order to have a successful trail.
Well for most trails booked through a good operator everything you need is be included such as sleeping tents, sleeping bags, food, porters and of course guides. However for those of you who insist on having a check list with what to bring on a Peruvian trek we have compiled a brined rundown of items you might like to have with you.
- Make sure you take purification tablets; you never know if for some strange reason you might need to get a drink from the nearby streams found throughout the various trails. It is highly unlikely that this will happen since you reporters will make sure to bring plenty of water and it is also suggested for you to bring your own bottled water but hey, you never know.
- If is not really necessary for you to bring any gadgets along your trail but some people insist on bringing compass’, an altitude estimator, watches that measure everything from time to weather to humidity in the air as well as other cool things. If this is a must for you than why not just bring a cell phone with apps that perform all of these functions. Nowadays our smart phones pretty much do it all.
- DO NOT BRING A LAPTOP/TABLET. Some people travelers have made the mistake of taking notebooks or tablets on their trail and have at some point slipped in the terrain only to see their gadgets broken from the fall. Additionally I wonder if manufacturers include testing their products in high altitudes, the Lares trek for example reaches almost 16,000 feet.
- It a no brainer to remember to pack clothes for different climates, during Andean treks temperatures will fluctuate a lot from hour to hour. I can be sunny and warm one minute and be snowing 10 minutes later.
- One tip is to take a pain reliever; personally I took over the counter migraine pills for the Lares trek in case I got a headache from the altitude. I was fine until the last day where we hit almost 16,000 feet and got a headache. I took a pill and was feeling much better 10 minutes later.

Holy week or “Easter” as it is more commonly known is coming up and both Peru locals as well as foreigners visiting the country / living in it will be leaving Lima for the provinces. Now that holy week is coming up everyone is getting ready to either have a cultural experience or just leave the city to have a relaxing time.
Some of the more important things to remember while traveling through Peru during Easter are to be a little more careful during the trip and to take special consideration to what these dates mean to the locals. Religion can be a very important aspect of the local culture in Peru especially in the provinces outside Lima. They tend to have processions, go to churches constantly and I’ve even gotten the older native giving me a sermon on what place religion and god should take in my life. So in short nod and be polite if this happens to you and try to take some joy in not just the fun of travel but the cultural experience this coming week is sure to provide.
Now for the other thing mentioned, “Safety” is a part of any trip to any part of the world, however while in south America it is wise to take extra special care during you travels. The thing is that thieves are on the lookout and are anxiously waiting for a tourist to take his or her eyes from their bag for even an instant during any holiday season, BAM no more suitcases and you’re stuck having to shop for jeans that don’t fit. True story :/
So when you head out to Ayacucho or anywhere else in the highlands of Peru remember to try and appreciate what religion means to the natives, in the highland there is a mesh of ethnic beliefs with a deep acceptance of the Christianity brought by the Spanish. The jungle has some of the same things but not as much as in the highland region.
Remember to have fun and be careful, always keep an eye on your stuff and stay with your friends, follow these simple instructions and you will have a great time during the upcoming Easter weekend/holy week celebrations.

The Colca Valley in Arequipa is preparing itself to receive around 4,000 tourists during the “Semana Santa” (holy week in Peru, Ester break to many around the world), according to the manager of the “autonomous authority” of Colca Oscar Villavicencio Ramos.
The villagers of the 14 districts in the valley have very devoted lives towards religion and this celebration, they make altars which are lifted and carried around the various districts during processions.
“We are going to promote activities for the upcoming semana santa through several travel agencies and our website,” stated Villavicencio, he also added that tourists will also have the chance to visit thermal baths in this region and the “Cruz del Condor” (cross of the condor) where you can actually see Andean condors taking flight, side note…they are HUGE birds and rather impressive to watch soar right over you.
Finally he added that thanks to the maintenance work done post rainy season which hit the area pretty hard the roads are in great shape and will be an inconvenience for the arriving travelers on their Peru tours.

The lead singer of the rock band U2 Bono left the Inca city of Machu Picchu today and went on to Ollantaytambo according to members of his party.
